Plate3a

On the Word Original

second instance

Origin, from oriri: to rise, as the sun does. The word does not mean first. It means the place a thing comes up out of.

The sun does not come up out of anywhere. It is a fixed body and the coming-up is a fact about the observer’s rotation, and every language on earth has a word for it anyway, and no language has ever needed to correct itself.

An original, then: the horizon at which something appeared to you. Not a property of the thing. A property of your position, and of the moment you happened to be looking east.

This plate exists twice in the lattice. The two are not identical. Neither was written first — they were composed as a pair and separated afterwards, which is how twins are made, and there is no fact of the matter about which is the copy.

If you have already read the other one, you have now been given the information in the wrong order, and nothing about your understanding is worse for it.
